Whittier History

In 1886, Aquilla Pickering, a businessman in Chicago and a member of the Quaker Society, traveled to California and Mexico, to locate a place to establish a new Quaker colony in the West. In 1887, Pickering and along with a group of real estate investors purchased a large area of ranch land property near the Puente Hills and formed the Pickering Land & Water Company. Two days later, the new settlement was named after poet John Greenleaf Whittier, himself a Quaker. The Pickering Land & Water Company board designated 20 acres of prime real estate as the site for a new Whittier College.

For most of its early decades Whittier slumbered, a quiet burg served by a rail line to downtown L.A. Came World War II and everything changed. Whittier's population jumped from 16,115 to 23,433 in the war decade and by 1960 had risen to 33,663. Then it really took off, doubling itself in the Sixties to 72,863 residents. Timing is important because by the Sixties homes had started to grow. About 60 percent of the town was built over two decades, 1950 to 1970.

Whittier Housing

The downtown is anchored by an historic district. In the summer time, tall trees break out in orange blossoms. Restaurants, cafes and shops line the quaint, clean streets.  Influenced by the downtown area, the surrounding neighborhoods are adorned with roses and birds of paradise. Homeowners take pride in their homes and enjoy keeping up appearances. Whittier has its plain housing too. The State of California counted 29,214 housing units, 18,892 single homes, 1,261 single attached homes, and 8,861 multiples housing dwellings in 1999.

Total Units 57,504
Owner Occupied 63.6%
Renter Occupied 36.4%
Average Home Value $215,750
Median Home Value (1999) $197,653
Median Rent (1999) $602

Whittier has neighborhoods blanketed with that favorite, the three bedroom home, but it also has sections where the homes are bigger, the attention to detail greater. These neighborhoods include a country club subdivision. Some streets rise into gentle hills. Whittier is bordered on its east and south by large unincorporated and diverse neighborhoods.

Whittier Lifestyle

With more than 200 shops and other businesses, Whittier’s "Uptown" district offers homeowners an array of ethnic restaurants, coffeehouses, live music in a variety of venues, movies houses, a variety of interesting shops with vintage clothing, used books and CDs, the many professional services from hair salons to florists to medical practices. Uptown Whittier is the location for several community events throughout the year, including antique street fairs, a holiday parade and a farmers market.
